Ekanath Padmanabhan Unny or E.P Unny, as he is popularly known, is a name that resonates deeply within the world of political satire in India. As a highly celebrated political cartoonist, he has used his exceptional artistic abilities to offer ironically humorous and thought-provoking insights into Indian politics.

E.P Unny extended his creative ability beyond drawing cartoons, touching upon the realm of novels as he authored graphic novels in Malayalam. At the forefront of the niche genre in India, his graphic shorts began to feature in renowned Malayalam literary journals in the 1990s. He also authored a beautifully illustrated travel book 'Spices and Souls: A doodler's journey through Kerala'.

E.P. Unny was born into the Ekanath family in Elappully, Palakkad, in the culturally rich Indian state of Kerala. It was here, in Elappully, that his artistic inclinations took root. His academic pursuits led him to study Physics at a university in Kerala, but his passion for drawing took precedence. Here, a student of science disillusioned with the rigidity of the subject, casually sketched his way to a profound career as a cartoonist.

Business as Usual, Journey of the Indian Express Cartoonist' (2009) offers readers a peek into his perspective on politics, society, and the world at large. Meanwhile, his visual tribute to another doyen of Indian cartooning, RK Laxman is encapsulated in 'RK Laxman: Back with a Punch' (2022).

In 1973, Unny's first cartoon was published in Shankar's Weekly, making public his critique of socio-political events in the form of ink and paper.

His work 'Of Ghosts and Writers: A Graphic Story' (2004) was a soulful exploration of the relationship between writers and their invisible muses. It garnered accolades and further sealed Unny's reputation as a raconteur par excellence.

Before he became a renowned Indian political cartoonist, EP Unny briefly donned the hat of a banker. But it was only in 1977 that he perhaps summoned enough courage to step off the beaten path and embraced cartooning as a profession, beginning his journey with The Hindu, one of the oldest and most respected English daily in India.As Unny found his footing in the world of journalism, his work with The Hindu became an avenue for his talent to be recognised.

Adding another feather to his already feathered cap, E.P. Unny embarked on the voyage of authorship with his book, 'Santa and the Scribes: The Making of Fort Kochi', which combines the best of history, travel, and cultural discovery. Published in 2014, this book offers a riveting exploration of Fort Kochi's historical evolution and its present-day presence, all in a style that is inherently Unny.

After 12 years with The Hindu, Unny expanded his horizon, making Delhi his new operational base. He joined The Sunday Mail, further solidifying his reputation as a searing, witty observer of politics and society. His stint with The Economic Times from 1993 to 1996 demonstrated his versatile cartoonist skills, ranging from business satire to sharp political commentary. The accolades and recognition were no surprise when he eventually joined The Indian Express as the Chief Political Cartoonist.

For his significant contributions as a skilled cartoonist, EP Unny was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists in 2009. This recognition serves as a testament to his distinctive skill of blending humour and satire to create thought-provoking work, proving the dominance of this versatile cartoonist.

Over the years, his cartoons softened the harsh realities of Indian politics with humour, making them palatable for an audience that would otherwise be disinterested. Unny has the unique ability to capture complex political happenings with minimalist artistry, penning down his commentary with satire and wit.
